On a jeep ride with friends in the high country of the Sierra mountain range near Kennedy Meadows, I found a handful of obsidian shards left generations ago by Miwoks making arrowheads. Nearby, we also found an abandoned, high tech, aluminum arrow. The juxtaposition of these two examples of ancient weaponry, one old, one new, collided in my mind and this mask emerged.
